Orthomolecular medicine
What is Orthomolecular Medicine (OM)?
The term nutrient therapy includes both a nutritional medicine approach and orthomolecular medicine, i.e. the administration of high-dose individual substances.
Orthomolecular medicine (OM) serves to maintain good health (prevention) as well as to treat diseases. By changing the concentration of the body’s own substances that are important for health.

In alternative medicine, especially in Germany, Austria and Switzerland, which is state-recognized alongside conventional medicine, orthomolecular medicine is very important. When used correctly, orthomolecular therapy in the hands of an experienced therapist means there are practically no fears of side effects or harm. On the contrary, there is often rapid healing or relief of symptoms, and in some cases even drastic results can be observed.
Which materials are used in (OM)?
Vitamins, minerals, trace elements, fatty acids, amino acids, co-enzymes and enzymes, as well as hormone-like substances that are of great importance for the organism are primarily used.

Some examples:
Cancer prevention / autoimmune processes / thyroid → selenium
Immune system / autoimmune processes / osteoporosis → D – vitamin
Cardiovascular / Anti-inflammatory → Omega 3
Sleep disorders / powerful antioxidant → melathonine
Pancreatic insufficiency → trypsin
Liver detoxification phase II → L – glutathione
Stomach ulcer → gastrazyme – hydrozyme / IPS etc.
These are just a few suggestions, the effects of the preparations mentioned are much more versatile.
There are 2 types of OM therapy:
1. Compensatory therapy / preventive therapy
Compensation for a suspected or actual deficiency (e.g. substitution of Omega 3 + Vitamin E for leg cramps at rest, without exercise (at night), or preventive administration of magnesium to prevent various symptoms of a magnesium deficiency.
2. Regulatory therapy
High doses in the sense of pharmacological therapy (Omega 3 + Vit. E 4,000 – 6,000 mg and more) for joint pain and inflammation, e.g. rheumatoid arthritis.
Correctly carried out OM therapy must be based on the clinical indication or proven deficiency conditions. For example, hair analysis (39 element examination) in our laboratory in Germany, in which trace elements such as selenium, manganese, copper and many others are recorded. In addition, this analysis also records heavy metal contamination that leads to neurological symptoms such as tremor, dementia and Parkinson’s and assesses it in the laboratory. A variety of other alternative medical examinations such as vitamin status, intestinal analyzes and hormone status (saliva examination) are also available through this laboratory.
OM does not replace a complete diet, but rather supplements it where deficiencies can no longer be adequately compensated for through food. Or where it is intended to compensate for illnesses, clinically relevant symptoms or deficiencies with medication. In today’s society with an overabundance of food, fast-growing and chemically processed foods that are unripe and full of pesticides and insecticides, healthy eating is becoming more difficult every year. The proportion of essential food components (vitamins/trace elements) is also falling rapidly.
The OM therefore does not represent modern nonsense, but rather a fundamental security for your health.
Already knew ? Deficiencies caused by medication!
ASS (acetylsaliyl acid e.g. aspirin)
- reduces vitamin C absorption, inhibits the effect of K vitamin (be careful when taking ASA and coumarins together), lowers folic acid (B 9) and cobalamin (B 12), can cause often unrecognized, mild but chronic gastrointestinal bleeding lead to iron losses and thus to iron deficiency anemia.
Diuretics
- thiazides and loop diuretics increase renal potassium, magnesium and zinc excretion, loop diuretics also increase renal calcium and B 1 excretion.
H2 blockers (stomach acid blockers)
- reduces the absorption of folic acid (B 9) and cobalamin (B 12). Unfortunately, this medication also contains a very high proportion of aluminum and most others only contain slightly less!
Metformin (group of oral antidiabetic drugs)
- reduces the level of B 1 / B 12 and folic acid (B 9) This and the drug itself increase the homocysteine level. This and the high need for B vitamins increase the risk of arteriosclerosis in diabetics.
Corticoids (cortisone the weapon against everything)
- increases the consumption of Vit. C, increases the renal excretion of B 6, increases the need for vitamin D, reduced calcium absorption (a deficiency in calcium and vitamin D both contribute to corticosteroid-related osteoporosis), increases the renal excretion of potassium, Copper, magnesium and zinc, reduce selenium levels (this is particularly fatal, since selenium has a protective effect and is therefore fundamentally important, especially in autoimmune diseases, for which corticosteroids are very often used), and a Q 10 reduction is also suspected.
Statins (blood fat lowering cholesterol lowering drugs)
- by reducing HMG – CoA reductase activity, not only the body’s own synthesis of cholesterol, but also Q 10 is reduced, vitamin E and beta – carotene levels are reduced (Q10 in particular and antioxidants are more essential in heart patients, for whom statins are preferred meaning. )
Last but not least – tetracycline (broad spectrum antibiotic)
- increases the renal excretion of vitamin C, destroys the intestinal flora, which contributes to a certain extent to the vitamin K and biotin supply through bacterial synthesis. Other intestinal damage can be found under intestinal microbiome on our homepage. Also increases the renal excretion of zinc (both vitamin C and zinc were very important for our immune system).
These are all reasons why OM therapy is important for our health.

If you don’t do something for your health every day, you’ll have to invest a lot of time later on your illness!
Interested? Individual OM therapy! Bring any medications you are taking with you to your first appointment. In a detailed discussion and possibly laboratory analysis, we will work with you to take the first step towards health.
Also take a look at our homepage under „Academy“, we organize information evenings from time to time on the subject of correct supplementation –„Almost everyone does it – very few people know what they are doing!“.

Are you a therapist yourself: physiotherapist / kinesiologist / nutritionist / osteopath, or do you want in-depth training in the field of OM therapy? Then start our 4-month compact training with us as a specialist therapist for orthomolecular medicine or specialist in orthomolecular medicine depending on your previous professional status.
